I’m reading all the letters left lying bloodstained on hotel floors. Released from the narrative uncertainties, I’ve been able to slow down. Now I’m playing again, the refinements are coming through. The dramatic set pieces certainly had an emotional effect, but I felt bludgeoned by them, like someone telling you their life story while challenging you to 12 rounds of mixed martial arts combat. I charged through it, engulfed in the physical, visceral dread and violence of the action. The first time I played Naughty Dog’s brilliant post-apocalyptic sequel, it was such a raw, breathless experience I barely gave myself the time to think about the world or the character motivations.
